Guitar Amp – Buyers Guide

Looking to buy your first amp but not sure what to go for? Then read our guitar amp buyers guide packed full of top tips. Choosing the correct amp is an important decision. The right amp should fit your budget, your playing needs, and provide the sound you want.

Combo or Head and Stack?

Guitar Amps basically come in two varieties. A combination, or combo amp and speaker cabinet built together, or an amplifier head and stack. The reality is, it’s all about loudness and size. General speaking a combo guitar amp are fine for small gigs, garage bands and personal use. However, if you are looking to play a larger venue then opt for a separate head unit and speaker cabinet stack arrangement. Having said that, if you like to go overboard with your guitar gear, then a stack is fine, just keep the volume down if you playing it in your bedroom!

Practise Amps

What if I just want something small to start with? Then consider a practise guitar amp. They have smaller single speakers, paired with a low powered amplifier and some form of modeling. Practise amps are cheaper than other styles of amp but the quality matches the price. Sound quality is reduced and volume is limited.

Tube or Solid State?

Solid state guitar amps produce a much cleaner tone at higher volume levels than tube amplifiers. The downside is that it can often lack the warmth of a tube designed amp. The argument is very similar to compact disc vs vinyl. While tube guitar amps are superior in terms of technology, tube amps provide a magical vintage sound.

Speakers

The majority of mainstream guitar amp brands make their own speaker cones for installing into their cabinets or amp combos. Higher end brands may use external brand name speakers like, Jenson, in their amps. Speaker sizes generally range from 10 inches through to 15. Larger speakers provide a richer bass sound.

Modeling

Modeling guitar amps allow you to adjust the sound of the amp and create effects. Most amps these days have some type of modelling built into them. Modeling guitar amps are capable of a wide range of effects, tones and sounds.

There are lots of guitar amp brands to choose from. They vary in price and quality.
